You buy this kit for what it allows later, not for what it ships with today. What it ships with is the usual — a Hub 2 Plus panel, a PIRCAM HDR photo detector, a magnetic contact and a key fob — basic cover for a home. What it allows is different: up to 200 devices and up to 100 IP cameras or recorder channels on the same panel. That is where it parts company with an ordinary kit.
The panel reports over four routes: Ethernet, Wi-Fi and two 4G SIM cards. If one carrier is weak at the property or the router reboots itself, the alarm never notices. Its own 868 MHz radio runs Jeweller and Wings — the second one carries the PIRCAM photos — with Grade 2 certification, an anti-tamper switch and up to 200 users, capped at 10 between wireless sirens and touchscreen keypads. It is run from the phone app, and from the PC software on the installer side.
How we install it. The panel goes indoors, screwed to the wall on its SmartBracket — it carries a rear tamper, so propping it up will not do — with a power point nearby; the wired path needs a network socket, and both SIMs go in with their PIN disabled. We keep it away from metal cabinets and more than a metre from the router, which is where range is lost. Each device is added by scanning its QR code in the Ajax app, and before we finish we run the signal-strength test device by device.
The panel on its own is the Hub 2 Plus. If the house is small and will not grow, the Hub 2 kit does the same with a lower ceiling. And if one area is out of radio reach, a signal repeater fixes it.
