It is the smallest and cheapest of the family, and in many homes it is all that is needed: five gigabit ports to turn a single network outlet into four, behind the television or on a desk.

It measures 85 × 52 mm — it sits in the palm of your hand — and draws 2.1 W, so it can stay plugged in all year without a second thought. It moves 10 Gbps of capacity with a 2,000-address MAC table: for a corner of the house, that is plenty.

What it does not have: PoE, management and the surge protection of its eight-port sibling. For a living room it is fine; if cameras or the main equipment of the house are going to hang off it, look at one of the others — or ask us and we will say which. And one warning that saves disappointment: a switch multiplies the sockets, it does not multiply the speed coming down the cable and it does not improve the Wi-Fi. If the problem is a slow connection, the answer lies elsewhere, and we will tell you so.
