Description
When the budget matters but a lot of cameras are needed, this is where to look: a 16-channel NVR from Hikvision’s HiWatch range, with 4K output over HDMI or VGA.
Cameras arrive through the network port, not through built-in PoE sockets. That means you need a separate PoE switch, but it also means the cameras can be spread around the building instead of dragging sixteen cables back to one cabinet. It accepts Hikvision and ONVIF cameras, so it does not tie you to one brand.
- 160 Mbps in and 80 Mbps out: that split is what decides the quality all sixteen can record at.
- Records at up to 8 MP and down to CIF, with H.265+ to use far less disk than older equipment.
- Two-way audio on one channel over an RCA connector.
- SATA disks of up to 8 TB each, not included.
- Gigabit network, with access from a browser, the phone app or the desktop software.
Two things worth knowing first: it has no alarm inputs or outputs — if you want a detector to trigger a recording, that has to be solved another way — and it draws under 10 W in a 265 × 225 × 48 mm chassis weighing under a kilo without disks. Tell us what cameras you have in mind and we will say whether this unit fits.
