A PTZ isn’t just a bigger fixed camera — it covers a site in a different way. Where you’d otherwise need three or four fixed cameras (a large courtyard, a plot, a car park), this one sweeps it alone. It turns a full 360° with no end stop, tilts −5° to 90° with auto-flip, and its 25× optical zoom (5–125 mm) goes from the wide view to a far detail without losing resolution — the zoom is in the lens, not in software.
At night it reaches 100 metres on smart IR with six LEDs, dimming when the subject is close so it doesn’t burn out white. The 120 dB WDR rescues the scene everyone here has: a camera pointed at a doorway with the Costa sun behind it. It has image stabilisation — for vibration when mounted high up — plus digital defog. Working range: −40 to 65 °C.
When to pick it. To watch one specific entrance, a fixed camera is simpler and has no moving parts to wear out — Dahua cameras. A PTZ earns its place when there’s ground to sweep or you need to follow someone live.
How we install it. It wants PoE+ (802.3at) or 12 V DC 2 A, so the first job is checking the switch delivers that class: with PoE+, one network run per camera is enough. It is heavy: it goes on solid wall or a pole, the fixing sized for weight and wind, cable run inside. Then we set pan limits and presets, keeping the public road and the neighbour’s plot out of frame. To record it, it pairs with an 8-channel 4K NVR, which runs off its own 12 V supply and does not power the camera; and that recorder needs a surveillance hard drive, not included.
